At the Horizon #7: 10800 Zombies

•August 2, 2008 • 1 Comment

10800 Zombies

The guy that created ‘Super Ninja Hunter’ (JW, Nobody) is back for another round, this time with a zombie game. His own description says it’s a simple shooter, with all the awesome aspects of one of those. After playing the demo, I do agree. You kill zombies with a wide arrange of devastating weapons and jump from platforms. The kind of uniqe blood effects are very pretty, and the weapon system is really easy to use. Although it’s a zombie shooter with a simple light engine, you wont be terrified by it: the graphics are really cute, and it’s almost so that you don’t want to shoot the cute little pixelmonsters when they come charging at you. JW provided me with a new, uniqe screenshot of a new enemy in the game, the Fat Zombie. And I can’t help but to fall in love with the cute little fella’. And he’s green.
Green :’)

Kick start all over again – rewind

•July 25, 2008 • 2 Comments

As you may have noticed I started posting again. The following days will be busy for me though, with an Iron Maiden concert tomorrow and the premiere of the new Batman film in just a couple of hours etc. But I will try to post as much as I can, and I’m thinking of making an “At the Horizon” post in just a couple of minutes before leaving my flat for The Dark Knight. I hope you’ll keep reading the posts in the blog and I hope that you still like it. So, the new kick start is going to be bumpy by the looks of it, but I’m doing my best.

Oh, and depending on how much the movie affects me, I might do a top 5 of superhero related games.

Stallions in America

Stallions in America

3 hours is not a long time to make a game in. Then what about making a long, good game? Well, I know I wouldn’t make it in 24 hours. But, there’s this guy that calls himself “cactus”… I don’t know if you heard about him? He’s pretty good at this stuff. And he made a new, awesome game. In 3 hours.

What the fuck does he have for breakfast?
The game is about these four hunks going renegade on all the states of America, killing and destroying everything and everyone in their way. The colours are flashy and crazy (As always with Cactus) and they change from stage to stage. It’s fast paced action with birds(?) and people running around and exploding on the screen to hip 8 bit tunes. The visuals are clean and very retro, and the gameplay is, of course, really fun and polished. You get to choose between the four hunks before playing, and they all have their different set of weapons which are very variated. Try it out.

The Mistake

The Mistake

Once every now and then you just want to do something ridiculously controversial or offending, just to see peoples reactions to it. Luckily, most people have the power to control their will or sudden urge that could lead to horrible results. FearedMachina (The maker of the highly recommended game ‘Detoss Law’) obviously don’t give a damn about offending entire organisations that are fighting for their cause. It’s either really brave, or really, really foolish. Now, I’m completley neutral in the discussion about the quality of this game, but it’s really bad (“No he didn’t!!”). The visuals range from pixelated vaginas to drops of sperm and bloody kitchenknives, and crazy (Horrible!) sounds. It’s an experience you should survive, but it may leave you shaken. It’s meant to be bad, it’s meant to be offending. It was made for a 3 hour competition over at The Poppenkast, so the question “How much madness is possible to create in three hours for a game?” (Yea I made that up, original huh?) is pretty much answered.

Yes, there’s a vagina behind the white dude.

Enjoy it. And young ones, please, look away this time.

Top Five 3D Favorites #1: Toribash

Toribash

I’ve spent hours and hours on this game, and I’m not done just yet. It’s a tactical fighting game, where you get turns to adjust your movement before seeing it in action. It’s a brilliant idea, and as I said, it will keep you entertained for hours and hours. The simple graphics fits the gameplay and the sounds are descent. It costs a small fee to go online and to get all of the modes, but I tell you: It’s worth it. If you’re interested you can try out the single player. And don’t give up too easy, it’s a deep game and the learning curve isn’t the best. Hang in there and discover the magic of Toribash. This is violence perfected.

Top Five 3D Favorites #2: Nexuiz

Nexuiz

Nexuiz is based on the upgraded, open source Quake I engine and is completely free to play. Only multiplayer, online or lan, it looks great and it’s loads of fun. As expected it’s really fast paced and it plays a lot like Quake, but there’s just one tiny little detail… It’s free, Quake isn’t. Along with multiple game modes and several playable characters it’s a hit when having a lan with your friends. You should try it out.

Tumiki Fighters

Kenta Cho’s now legendary shmup is all about sticking pieces of your enemies to yourself to become more powerful. It looks good, it plays great and it’s fun. Otherwise it wouldn’t be on this list, right? Control your pieces and play it right to get the best bonus score. Now, the game is 2D, but rendered in 3D, so it makes it on the list anyway. I’m in charge, you know.

Top Five 3D Favorites #4: Mondo Agency

Mondo Agency

Cactus never stops to surprise with his crazy concepts and game ideas. His first release in the ‘Mondo’ series was ‘Mondo Medicals’, were you had to solve a bunch of illogical puzzles in a simple 3D world. The cutscenes were scary as hell, and the whole atmosphere spelled “WEIRD!”. The follow up, Mondo Agency, perfected everything and added a lot more. The graphics were better, the story went weirder and the atmosphere got creepier. Never had I thought I would be afraid of something called “Laser Indians”.

It’s a must play for everyone that’s into games, and there’s a bunch of videos on youtube for you to check out. Or you could just play it yourself. It’s a well crafted harmony of visuals, sound and story to keep you on your toes every minute playing it.

Top Five 3D Favorites #5: Hover Tank 3D

Hover Tank 3D

The graphics are simple yet very styleish, the gameplay is hard yet fun, the story is presented through fast text dialouge yet very well thought through. Hover Tank 3D is a great game, and it certainly proves that 3D games doesn’t have to be commercial to be quality. It may be more casual then i.e Cactus games, but it doesn’t matter when the gameplay offers this much variety. It also contains online multiplayer.
